Artistic Transformation
Disgust. That was the first word that came to my mind when seeing an insect or even thinking about insects. My internal experience included fear, anxiety, avoidance, and repulsion. These images are a study of shifting perspective. Though unexpected, they represent a way of transforming disgust into curiosity. Forcing myself to interact with insects created an opportunity to form a different relationship. To find engaging beauty in something experienced earlier as fear and avoidance. Seeking to find what was hated, manipulating with my hands what was frightening, and capturing new ways of relating to negative experience were the motivations to this works. As colors, shadows, and patterns emerged, distaste shifted to awe, awe to understanding, and understanding to experience-seeking obsession.
